In 1998, a movie entitled "Jose Rizal" was filmed about the life of the Philippine national hero. This post will include a mini-movie review as well as a synopsis of the various controversies that arose from the production. The film is based on two books – Jose Rizal: Life and Works by Austin Craig and J.P. Sartorius, and Jose Rizal 1811-1896: The Great Scientist, Writer and Nationalist by James A. Robertson – which recount historical data related to his life presented in either a factual or romanticized manner depending upon each author's perception of Rizal's character. In a manner similar to the previous Rizal film, "Noli me Tangere", the movie "Jose Rizal" did not have a flawless production. In this case, however, there was more controversy regarding casting and character portrayal. In February 1999, Warner Bros. Asia announced that they would be producing a 90-minute movie version of Jose Rizal's life. The chosen author for the script was Austin Craig, a professor at the University of Denver. The screenplay was signed in February 1999 and in January 2000 filming began with an anticipated completion date in May 2000. The casting choice resulted in much controversy within and outside of Metro Manila. The lead role of Rizal was played by Ara Mina, while the role of Juan dela Cruz was supposed to be portrayed by Jack O'Halloran. However, Ara Mina had declined the offer for fear of getting typecast. In February 2001 Warner Bros. Asia announced that the life story was scrapped in favor of a new script based on other material published by other authors, with neither Ara Mina nor O'Halloran reprising their roles, and instead other actors were chosen for their respective roles. Within months, however, Jack O'Halloran returned to Manila for a few days to take up his old role again where he continued shooting until April 2001. It was a question not only of the casting but also of the portrayal of Jose Rizal. The character Rizal was played by a Filipino with a mixed Chinese-Spanish blood – with dark features – rather than a light-skinned Filipino as portrayed in most movie versions of Philippine history.[[Category:American films set in the Philippines]] [[Category:Films about Jose Rizal| ]] [[Category:Films directed by Jerrold Tarog]] [[Category:Films set in Madrid]] [[Category:Films shot in the Philippines]] [[Category:Films shot in Spain]] [[Category:Warner Bros. films]] [[Category:Films about José Rizal]] [[Category:Films directed by Jerry Lopez Sineneng]] [[Category:Films directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes]]Read More >> http://www.flickside.com/articles/rizalshowdown.htm#ixzz4GJ1hlMPj [[Category:1990s Philippines-related films]] [[Category:2000s Philippines-related films]] [[Category:Films shot in the Philippines (country)]] [[Category:Films directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes]] [[Category:Films based on novels by Austin Craig and James A. eccc085e13
